At least 10 people were killed and 16 others injured in a riot that broke out during visiting hours at a prison in Mexico's northwestern state of Sinaloa, authorities said on Thursday.
In a statement, the Sinaloa Public Security Secretariat said the riot erupted during visiting hours at the prison in the city of Mazatlan.
The statement said nine inmates and one inmate's relative were killed, while the 16 injured inmates were receiving treatment at hospitals.
Local media reports said inmates used firearms.
Authorities have not yet released further details about the incident.
Mexico's Federal Security Cabinet said the National Guard intervened and that the situation at the prison, which houses 1,800 inmates, had been "brought under control."
Violence is common in Mexico's prisons, many of which are overcrowded and under the influence of drug gangs.
