Washington hosts Freedom 250 Grand Prix for US' 250th anniversary

Washington transformed into a high-speed motor circuit on Sunday for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, a marquee event celebrating the 250th anniversary of the US.

“It has turned out to be, I think, bigger and better,” President Donald Trump said prior to the race. He highlighted that while efforts to bring the IndyCar series to the capital spanned 20 years, his administration resolved the logistical hurdles quickly to ensure the historic celebration occurred.

Kyle Kirkwood, a 27-year-old driver for Andretti Global, claimed the top spot on the podium after completing the extended 147-lap contest. He was followed by Christian Lundgaard of Arrow McLaren and teammate Will Power.

The 1.7 mile (2.7 kilometers) course navigated the streets surrounding the US Capitol, drawing an estimated crowd of tens of thousands of fans.

Before the competition began, Trump’s motorcade performed an honorary loop around the circuit. Trump later officially launched the 15th round of the 2026 NTT IndyCar Series by waving the green flag. He expressed satisfaction with the "wonderful" track and noted the importance of public safety and enjoyment during the festivities.
