CAIRO
Arab League asked the Syrian opposition coalition to form a steering committee for temporary membership in the league.
Arab foreign ministers have offered the Syrian opposition coalition the country's seat at the Arab League on condition that it first forms a steering committee.
Following the Arab League foreign ministers' meeting in Cairo, Arab League SG Nabil Al-Araby told a press conference about the offer to the Syrian National Coalition, the Western- and Arab-backed opposition umbrella group, on Wednesday. Egypt FM Mohamed Kamel Amr said SNC was the only representative of Syrians, and called on UN to hold an international conference on rebuilding of Syria.
The 22-member Arab League suspended Syria's membership in 2011 after President Bashar al-Assad's government did not abide by an Arab peace plan that aimed to end the conflict.
Arab foreign ministers also called on UNSC to immediately take a recommendatory decision required for Palestine's "full UN membership".
Turkey welcomes Arab League's offer to SNC
Turkey welcomed the decision of Arab League giving Syrian National Coalition the seat of Syria at the League.
Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Thursday that they were glad that SNC would be the only representative at the Arab League and was invited to the next Arab League summit as the representative for Syria that would be held on March 26-27 in Qatar.
The ministry said the decision taken was very appropriate to consolidate SNC's position and an important and meaningful message to Assad regime.
Ministry congratulated Arab League for its decision and hoped it would set a model for other international agencies.
