China is against all forms of cyber attacks, the country’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has told U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, state media reported Monday.
Xinhua news agency said Wang made the declaration during a phone conversation late Sunday.
Paraphrasing Wang, the agency reported him as saying China opposed any country or individual launching cyber attacks.
The announcement came in the wake of U.S. allegations that North Korea, a long-time ally of China, was responsible for an attack on Sony Pictures last month over plans to screen a film depicting the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
North Korea has denied it was to blame and offered to take part in an investigation with the U.S. After U.S. President Barack Obama promised to “respond proportionately” against North Korea over the attack, Pyongyang threatened unspecified action against the White House and the Pentagon.
"Our toughest counteraction will be boldly taken against the White House, the Pentagon and the whole U.S. mainland, the cesspool of terrorism," the North declared in a statement reported by the official Korean Central News Agency.
In the past, the U.S. has also accused China of cyber espionage and said Chinese computer servers may have been used in the Sony hack.
