French Justice Minister Christiane Taubira has resigned on Wednesday, according to the French presidency.
“Christiane Taubira, Minister of Justice, has presented this January 27, 2016, her resignation to the President of the Republic, who accepted it,” the Elysee said in a statement.
“They [French president- Taubira] agreed on the need to terminate her functions when the debate on the constitutional revision starts at the National Assembly today,” added the statement.
Taubira’s resignation comes ahead of a key parliamentary debate to change the French constitution.
Taubira was strongly opposed to French President Francois Hollande and Prime Minister Manuel Valls’s plan to strip bi-nationals of French citizenship if they were found guilty of terror offenses.
“Sometimes resisting is to remain, sometimes resisting is leaving. Out of loyalty to oneself, to us. For the last word [to go to] ethics and law,” tweeted Taubira following her resignation.
Socialist Party deputy Jean-Jacques Urvoas will replace her as justice minister.
