BRUSSELS
The E.U.'s incoming foreign policy chief has told the European Parliament that she supports the bloc’s enlargement policy – which includes Turkey and the Western Balkans.
Italian foreign minister Federica Mogherini, who has been nominated to be the E.U.’s next minister of foreign affairs, indicated her support for enlargement during a wide-ranging commitee meeting at the European Parliament on Monday.
''I believe the enlargement policy is the best in terms of stability and development,’’ Mogherini said, adding that proceeding with the policy in a consistent manner was not only in the interest of individual countries but also in the interest of Europe’s security and economic prosperity.
Balanced approach towards Russia
The E.U. needs to handle Russia with firmness and tact, Mogherini said during her three-hour contribution. "I would say that we need a mix of assertiveness and diplomacy. The balance would also depend on the reaction of the [Russian] bear," she added.
''Russia might not be a partner at the moment; still, it is a neighbor,'' Mogherini said.
The 41-year-old was nominated for the position of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on August 30, succeeding the U.K.’s Catherine Ashton. The Italian politician will formally take the post on November 1.
