CAIRO
The British and Canadian embassies in Cairo have closed their doors due to the refusal of Egyptian authorities to seal routes leading to their respective premises, Egyptian security sources have said.
Both embassies, the sources said, had asked Egyptian authorities to seal off the routes leading the missions – as is currently the case with the U.S. embassy in Cairo – in order to help secure the two buildings.
Egyptian authorities, however, informed officials of the two embassies that their respective premises and staffs were secured, the sources added.
Earlier Monday, the Canadian embassy in Cairo shut its doors citing "unsettled security conditions."
The move came only one day after the British embassy, located only meters away, took a similar step.
"Security concerns are behind Sunday's decision by the British embassy in Cairo to suspend its activities until further notice," a British embassy source, requesting anonymity, told The Anadolu Agency on Sunday.
"The procedure reflects our best assessment as to what is necessary for preserving the security of the embassy and its staff," the source, requesting anonymity, added.
