TEHRAN
A delegation from the UN atomic watchdog arrived in Tehran Tuesday for talks on Iran’s nuclear program.
Officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency, led by the agency’s Deputy Director General Tero Varjoranta, arrived to discuss inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Iran's official IRNA news agency said the delegation would start talks with Iranian officials "to discuss the remaining issues about Iran's peaceful nuclear program."
Earlier, Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said the UN delegation would finalize two steps of an agreement that focus on whether Iran’s nuclear program has a military aspect, which Iran denies.
Last month the agency reported that Iran had failed to disclose information on five points surrounding its alleged attempts to develop nuclear weapons.
The visit comes after an explosion at a suspected nuclear site in Parchin, 30 kilometers south-east of Tehran, killed two people. IRNA reported a fire at the plant while opposition website Saham described it as a strong explosion.
Talks between Iran and the P5+1 – the U.S., Britain, China, Russia, France and Germany – have led to a deal calling for Tehran to scale back its nuclear activities in exchange for the easing of economic sanctions.
The deadline for the talks has been extended to next month.
