BAGHDAD
Seven people were killed and 20 others were injured on Sunday in several incidents that rocked the Iraqi capital, a security source told Anadolu Agency.
The source said that two people were killed and seven others were injured after an improvised explosive device (IED) went off near a grocery store in al-Dawra district in southern Baghdad.
The source went on to say that three people were killed and 13 others were injured when two other IED explosions hit the southern district of Latifiya and in a restaurant in the Sheikh Omar area in central Baghdad.
Also, in al-Fadiliyya area in eastern Baghdad, unidentified assailants launched an armed attack on a shop, leaving the owner and his assistant dead.
On Sept. 1, Iraqi authorities adopted a new security plan for Baghdad that divides it into “22 entirely secure zones” to prevent ongoing attacks.
However, on the same day that the plan was unveiled, seven people were killed and dozens were injured by several explosions that rocked the city.
In February, PM Haidar al-Abadi lifted Baghdad’s eight-year-old nighttime curfew, citing “improved security conditions”.
Nevertheless, the Iraqi capital is still often rocked by violence, including frequent bombings and shooting attacks.
Iraq has suffered a devastating security vacuum since June 2014, when the Daesh militant group overran the northern city of Mosul.
