SANLIURFA, Turkey
Kurdish fighters battling militants of the extremist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL, in the Syrian town of Kobani approached the southern Turkish border after being wounded in overnight clashes, officials said Monday.
The wounded were brought via pick-up trucks bearing white flags to the border gate of Mursitpinar, located in the Suruc district of Turkey’s southeastern province of Sanliurfa.
No details have been released as to the number of the fighters.
Ambulances were sent to the Turkish side of the frontier to provide immediate medical treatment for the wounded.
Smoke was seen billowing from Kobani, also known as Ayn al-Arab, following clashes which could be seen from Suruc. U.S.-led coalition jets were seen flying over the region, an Anadolu Agency correspondent in Suruc reported.
The wounded were stretchered from the border gate and underwent a security check before being taken hospital.
Turkish security officers boosted security measures around the border gate while receiving the injured Kurdish fighters.
