Mexican security forces launched coordinated search operations across three states to locate Miguel Angel Almaraz Maldonado, the mayor of Rio Bravo in Tamaulipas, following his suspected abduction alongside companions over the weekend.
"The Security Cabinet, in coordination with authorities in San Luis Potosi, Zacatecas, and Tamaulipas, is conducting investigations and searches to locate the mayor of Rio Bravo," Mexico's federal security authorities announced.
The multi-agency effort involves ongoing coordination between federal institutions, the San Luis Potosi State Attorney General's Office, and the Tamaulipas State Attorney General's Office to clarify the circumstances and secure their release.
Armed assailants intercepted Almaraz, a member of the National Action Party (PAN), while he traveled with family members on Saturday afternoon, local media reported.
Police forces in San Luis Potosi mobilized early Sunday after determining that the interception occurred within Zacatecas territory along the San Tiburcio–Vanegas highway.
The current location and physical condition of the municipal leader and his accompanying relatives remain undisclosed, while authorities have not announced any formal ransom demands or specific cartel involvement.
