Turkish dailies generally cover on Friday the suspicious truck stopped at the Turkish-Syrian border, and the Turkish army’s filing a suit against the cases trying the generals accused of plotting to overthrow the government and demanding the retrial of the detained generals within the scope of the Ergenekon coup plot case.
-The truck was actually carrying humanitarian aid to Turkmens in Syria
The suspected truck and the allegations about it were largely covered by Turkish dailies. The truck allegedly carrying arms to Syria was stopped at the Turkish-Syrian border and was alleged to be sent by Turkish humanitarian relief foundation IHH. However, IHH refuted the claims. The truck and its load remain a mystery as the gendarmerie hold the truck and have not disclosed its contents. On Thursday Turkey's new Interior Minister Efkan Ala said the truck was actually carrying humanitarian aid to Turkmens in Syria.
Turkish daily HABERTURK headlined “The truck carries aid for Turkmens in Syria,” quoting interior minister Efkan Ala. Daily TURKIYE also quoted Ala's same words “Truck was going to Turkmens.”
On the other hand, daily CUMHURIYET headlined the issue by writing, “The Truck is of Turkish National Intelligence Service.” The daily wrote that Hatay's governor did not permit the police to search the truck and claimed that it was loaded with arms.
Daily MILLIYET also headlined the truck case and wrote “The Load of Truck: State Secret,” quoting the report by prosecutors. Claiming that Turkish intelligence service personnel did not permit the truck to be searched, it said the load was a state secret.
-Turkish Armed Forces General Chief of Staff files suit
Most Turkish dailies headlined the Turkish General Staff’s complaint regarding some of the cases in which the personnel of Turkish Armed Forces are being tried for plotting against the elected government.
Daily MILLIYET, RADIKAL, CUMHURIYET, and HABERTURK headlined “Indictment by the General Staff” on their front pages. Turkish Armed Forces General Staff filed a complaint against alleged plots against some of its personnel who are tried within the scope of the Ergenekon and Balyoz coup plot cases and military spying cases, said the dailies.
Daily VATAN headlined “Who set the plot,” writing that the General Staff filed an official complaint to the court to inquire into the perpetrators of the plot against Turkish Armed Forces personnel.
Daily POSTA also covered the issue on its front page and with the headline “Army out of patience.” The daily wrote that the army has been respectful to the judiciary since 2007, when Ergenekon and other related cases began and more than 500 retired and active personnel were detained. However, recent developments and claims of a plot against the army pushed the army's patience, prompting it to file a complaint for inquiry into these allegations.
