Morsi's supporters protest outside state TV, close main road

CAIRO

Hundreds of supporters of Egypt's deposed President Mohammad Morsi were protesting outside state television building Friday in Cairo, known as Maspero, as they closed the main Nile Corniche road.

The loyalists are protesting an army roadmap which saw Morsi overthrown and the head of the constitutional court head sworn in as interim president.

Maspero is only hundreds of meters away from the iconic Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo where thousands of anti-Morsi protestors are still celebrating his ouster.

Two Egyptian killed in clashes in Assiut

At least two were killed Friday in clashes between supporters of ousted President Mohammad Morsi and police in the Upper Egypt city of Assiut, about 300 km (186 miles) south of the capital, Cairo.

The clashes are taking place outside the Governorate headquerters in the city, medical sources told the Anadolu Agency.

Egypt Salafist leader Salah Abu Ismail arrested

Egyptian security forces have arrested Salafist leader and former presidential hopeful Hazem Salah Abu Ismail, a judicial source told the Anadolu Agency.

Abu Ismail, a popular Salafist figure who was a front-runner in the 2012 presidential race before being disqualified, was moved to Tora prison, eastern Cairo, the source added.

Egypt's army warns over 'provocative' acts against peaceful protesters

The Egyptian military has warned over any "provocative acts" against peaceful protesters.

"The right to peaceful demonstration is guaranteed to all and the army is trying to protect all sides," according to a statement by the military spokesman obtained by the Anadolu Agency.

The statement dismissed as baseless reports that the Armed Forces had asked people to refrain from protesting to facilitate its efforts to impose law and order in the streets.
